Red/Amber Ale – Scottish: Brewdog 5 A.M. Saint

This weeks beer is called 5 A.M. Saint and is a Red/Amber Ale from the crazy guys over at Brewdog. This beer is great to drink at the start, all the way through and when summer is nearly over.

Let’s start with Brewdog‘s description of the beer:

5 A.M. Saint is our uber-hoppy red ale.

Start the car. The lights are about to turn amber.

Buy the ticket, take the ride.

Past the alley where thieves and pimps sell corporate brews and good men soak it up like vermin, blissful in their ignorance. Past the jackhammers who want their three and a half percent. Keep going. Towards that golden orb, the size of Zeus’s ass, that hovers over this crazy town.

Sleep late, have fun, get wild, drink amber, and drive like a bastard towards that saintly light.

Quite a strange description as always from Brewdog, but I’ve grown to accept nothing less from them. The description, is it metaphoric? Is it just a crazy description of the beer and what it would be like if it was a person, or thing?! Who knows! But we get the info we need. 5 A.M. Saint is indeed an uber-hoppy Red Ale.

Brewdog are always really open about what’s in their beer, which is nice. 5 A.M. Saint… there’s a meaning behind it. There’s 5 different types of malt: Maris Otter, Caramalt, Munich Malt, Crystal and dark crystal malt. The crystal malt is what gives Red Ales their red/ruby colour. Now for the hops: Nelson Sauvin, Amarillo, then it’s dry hopped with Simcoe, cascade, centennial. ahtanum, Nelson Sauvin. This gives the beer a very fruity, citrusy and pine character. The secret to this one, is the Dry-Hopping and late hop additions causing the hop flavours to be more forward in the brew’s taste and smell.

This beer pours a dark ruby colour with an off white almost tan head, as soon as you pour this beer a fruity caramel aroma escapes from the glass which is extremely inviting. Once you smell this beer you’ll notice some pine, some citrus and also some burnt sugar. It really does smell fantastic and makes you want to drink the whole thing in one go. Once you taste this beer you’ll get hit with a massive caramelised fruit taste, followed by pine and freshly cut grass, finishing with a citrus kick at the end. This really is quite a complex brew. It finishes quite sweet too for a hoppy beer which is nice because it won’t kill your palette. I’m going to be posting about another Red/Amber Ale next month, as they are one of those perfect beers for this time of year.

I really recommend this beer, and you can get it in a lot of places. At 5% it’s perfectly session-able and a great alternative to drinking IPA’s or Pale Ales.
